The Five Hundred Calorie Nothing Sandwich
One of the most important revelations I had when starting to eat healthy was HOW BAD sandwiches are.
Bread Makes You Fat.
Your basic wonder sandwich bread it 80 calories per slice. Other breads are 100-150 calories a slice.
White bread has the 'bran' removed - like the outside kernel of unpopped popcorn. This makes it break down quickly when you eat it, spiking your blood sugar. Wheat bread/whole grain isn't much better. The carbohydrates are still in their kernels - like unpopped popcorn - and so, take longer to disolve. But it has almost the same calories.
So, two slices of bread, empty, is 160-300 calories.
Add in a bit of mayo - a sandiwch isnt a sandwich without it, right? That's another 100 calories.
Then, a slice of cheese. That's another 100 calorie, and you're ready to start making a sandwich!!
500 calories before you even add the lunchmeat!
By the way, the lunchmeat, the reason you're making the sandwich? It's probably around 80 calories.
So, here's a better way.
Use a wrap, or other flat breads. Arnolds Bread has sandwich thins with 50 calories per slice.
Have an open face sandwich.
Pay attention to the calories in the bread!
Skip the mayo, use mustard at less than 10 calories per serving. Horseradish is between 5-30. Try other condiments - and, again, pay attention. There are a lot of great condiments with less than 40 calories.
Or.. Make Your Own! I have a bottle of bernaise - from mix, about 30 calories per tablespoon, to add a great taste to turkey, roast beef, asparagus. I also have a squeeze bottle of beef curry, from beef broth, at <10 calories per serving, and another with an herb chicken sauce.
